In a significant development for Bollywood cinema, producer Luv Ranjan has officially confirmed an upcoming action-adventure film starring two of the industry's most enduring stars, Ajay Devgn and Sanjay Dutt. The project, currently operating under the tentative title 'Ranger', marks a surprising first: despite decades in the industry and numerous shared screen credits, this will be the inaugural time Devgn and Dutt headline an action film together. Ranjan's production house, Luv Films, is set to roll out this high-profile venture, alongside other exciting projects including 'Vadh 2' and 'Cocktail 2'.
An Unprecedented Action Pairing
The announcement has generated considerable buzz, particularly given the extensive careers of both Ajay Devgn and Sanjay Dutt. Luv Ranjan himself expressed surprise at this unmet cinematic opportunity. "Ajay sir and Sanju sir have worked together so many times in these 25 years. Yet, they have never done an action film together. It is very shocking," Ranjan stated in an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama. He added, "It is extremely exciting that we’ll get to see them in an action film for the first time." This collaboration promises to deliver a fresh dynamic for fans accustomed to seeing the duo in different genres.
Tracing Their Shared Filmography
A closer look at Devgn and Dutt's filmographies reveals a history of collaborations that, until now, steered clear of the action genre for their combined lead roles. Their past projects include the romantic saga 'Mehbooba' (2008) and a series of successful comic capers such as 'Hum Kisise Kum Nahin' (2002), 'All The Best' (2009), 'Rascals' (2011), and 'Son Of Sardaar' (2012). They also made cameo appearances in 'Ready' (2011) and Sanjay Dutt had a special role in the Ajay Devgn-fronted 'Raju Chacha' (2000), all leaning heavily into comedy. While both actors have individually starred in numerous action films, and even shared screen space in ensemble actioners like 'LOC Kargil' (2003), 'Tango Charlie' (2005), and 'Bhuj: The Pride Of India' (2021), these instances did not feature them sharing direct action sequences or driving the narrative as a duo in the genre. This makes Luv Ranjan's upcoming film a genuine first, where they are set to be "pitted against each other" in an action context.
Tentative Title and Confirmed Release Date
While the film is currently known as 'Ranger', Luv Ranjan clarified that this is merely a working title. "Ranger is a tentative title. As usual, we are trying to figure out the correct title (laughs). The release is 11 months away. So, hopefully, by then, we’ll be able to find one," Ranjan shared with Bollywood Hungama. Alongside this detail, the producer also confirmed the release date, previously reported exclusively by the same outlet. "Yes, it's true," he said, affirming that the adventure flick is scheduled to hit cinemas on December 4, 2025.
Luv Films' Ambitious Slate
Luv Films, under Ranjan's guidance, is shaping up for a busy period. In addition to the Devgn-Dutt project, the production house is set to kick off 2026 with 'Vadh 2', the sequel to the critically acclaimed 'Vadh' (2022). This follow-up will once again star Sanjay Mishra and Neena Gupta, maintaining the essence of its predecessor, as Ranjan previously articulated, stating they "haven’t changed the grain" despite the success of the first film Bollywood Hungama. Furthermore, 2025 will also see the release of 'Cocktail 2', another exciting venture from the Luv Films stable. This film features a star-studded cast including Shahid Kapoor, Kriti Sanon, and Rashmika Mandanna, with Homi Adajania at the helm as director. Ranjan, who is producing 'Cocktail 2' with Dino (Dinesh Vijan), noted that it is "shaping up great," underlining the diverse and ambitious lineup from his production house.
