WSDOT Concludes Gorst Corridor Study Weighing Sinclair Inlet Bridge Alternatives as Construction Costs Remain Unfunded

State transportation planners are concluding a comprehensive two-year evaluation of the highway bottleneck at Gorst, presenting three surviving design alternatives to address chronic gridlock where State Route 3, State Route 16, State Route 166, and State Route 304 converge along Sinclair Inlet.

Under this configuration, through traffic between Tacoma and Bremerton moves directly onto the bridge structure, while the current shoreline road operates as a local arterial serving businesses and connecting traffic to Belfair.

State planners acknowledge that deep-water bridge piers must not disrupt tidal flushing or juvenile salmon migration routes out of Gorst Creek and tributary estuaries.

Defense strategists have repeatedly emphasized that operational readiness at the shipyard requires reliable overland freight corridors capable of moving heavy nuclear components and naval munitions without delay.

Heavy excavation along the Ross Creek Tributary began earlier this summer, requiring reduced highway speed limits of 45 miles per hour near Tremont Street and intermittent nighttime single-lane closures.
