Washington State Ferries Issues Notice to Proceed for Third Hybrid-Electric Vessel as Fleet Electrification Program Advances

Washington State Ferries has formally issued a Notice to Proceed to technology supplier ABB to provide and integrate the hybrid-electric propulsion system for a third newbuild passenger and vehicle vessel.

Contract terms establish financial incentives for the shipyard to expedite construction, targeting sea trials and primary delivery for the lead vessel in 2030, followed by the second hull in 2031 and the third in 2032.

Dual redundant switchboards divide electrical loads into independent physical zones, allowing the vessel to sustain continuous propulsion even if an isolated circuit fault occurs.

Decarbonization Mandates Drive WSF Away From 19 Million Gallons of Diesel Washington State Ferries ranks as the single largest institutional consumer of diesel fuel in state government, burning approximately 19 million gallons annually across its operational routes.

Measuring 409 feet in length with an 83-foot beam, each new hybrid vessel will accommodate 160 standard vehicles and 1,500 passengers, restoring crucial vehicle deck capacity to hard-pressed maritime corridors.
