WHO Declares Ebola Emergency in DR Congo Amid Vaccine Shortage

The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially designated the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as a public health emergency of international concern.

While the Zaire strain can have fatality rates as high as 90%, the BBC reports that previous Bundibugyo outbreaks resulted in a death rate of approximately 30%.

The BBC reports that the M23 rebel group currently controls areas in Goma where cases have been confirmed.

During the COVID-19 era, border closures were the default.

The virus spreads through direct contact with infected bodily fluids, such as blood, vomit, or sweat.
