Apple Bolsters AI Prowess with Acquisition of Stealthy Israeli Startup Q.ai
Apple confirms the acquisition of Q.ai, an Israeli AI startup focusing on whispered speech and advanced audio, founded by PrimeSense co-founder Aviad Maizels.

In a move set to further enhance its artificial intelligence capabilities, Apple has confirmed the acquisition of Q.ai, a largely secretive Israeli AI startup. The purchase marks a significant development, particularly given that Q.ai is led by Aviad Maizels, co-founder of PrimeSense, a company Apple previously acquired in 2013 (CTech). While the financial terms of the deal remain undisclosed, the acquisition signals Apple's continued investment in cutting-edge AI, particularly in the realm of advanced audio processing and human-device interaction.
A Second Act with Apple for Aviad Maizels
This acquisition represents a notable reunion for Aviad Maizels and Apple. Back in 2013, Apple acquired Maizels' previous venture, PrimeSense, in a deal reportedly valued at $350 million. That acquisition played a pivotal role in Apple's strategic shift from fingerprint sensors to facial recognition technology in its iPhone lineup. Following his departure from Apple, Maizels founded Q.ai in 2022 alongside Dr. Yonatan Wexler, formerly of OrCam, who serves as CTO, and artificial intelligence researcher Dr. Avi Barliya. The new startup, headquartered in Ramat Gan, quickly garnered significant investor interest, securing $24.5 million in Seed funding in January 2023. Prominent investors included Kleiner Perkins, Google’s Gradient Ventures fund, and other funds such as Aleph, Matter, Exor, and Corner Ventures (CTech).
Stealth Operations and Innovative Audio AI
Q.ai has largely operated under the radar since its inception, with limited public information available about its product offerings. However, Apple's confirmation sheds some light on the startup's innovative focus. According to Apple, Q.ai has been developing advanced machine learning applications specifically designed to revolutionize audio and communication experiences. Key among these technologies is the ability to enable "whisper-like speech" and significantly improve audio performance in challenging auditory environments. This specialization suggests a clear direction for Apple's future AI integration across its product ecosystem.
Enhancing Wearables and Siri Interaction
The potential applications of Q.ai's technology are particularly compelling for Apple's growing portfolio of wearable devices and its intelligent assistant, Siri. The ability to process and understand whispered speech, alongside enhanced audio performance in noisy settings, could profoundly impact user interaction with products like AirPods and the recently launched Vision Pro headset. This integration promises more natural and effective communication, addressing common frustrations associated with current voice interfaces. For Siri, such advancements could lead to a more responsive and accurate assistant, capable of discerning commands and questions even in less-than-ideal listening conditions.
Future Implications for Apple’s AI Strategy
While Apple has not explicitly detailed how Q.ai's technology will be integrated, senior vice president of hardware technologies, Johny Srouji, expressed enthusiasm for the acquisition. Srouji, Apple’s most senior Israeli executive, lauded Q.ai as "a remarkable company that is pioneering new and creative ways to use imaging and machine learning" (CTech). This statement, coupled with Maizels' own comment about "pushing boundaries and realizing the full potential of what we’ve created," indicates a strong alignment with Apple's strategic vision for AI. The integration of Q.ai's co-founders, Yonatan Wexler and Avi Barliya, into Apple further underscores the company's commitment to leveraging the startup's core expertise. Apple has already been incorporating new AI features into its AirPods, including a language translation technology introduced last year, signaling a broader trend of enhancing audio-focused AI capabilities.
