Ukraine Endures "Barbaric Attack" Amidst Ongoing Peace Talks
Ukraine faces extensive Russian missile and drone strikes targeting energy infrastructure and civilian sites, leaving millions without power, even as peace talks resume in the UAE.

Russia-Ukraine: Pokrovsk is Under Siege, 150,000 Russian Troops Attack | Gravitas

At least 20 killed in Russian drone, missile attacks across Ukraine
Ukraine has been subjected to a "massive" and "barbaric" overnight assault by Russian forces, targeting critical energy infrastructure and residential areas, even as delicate peace talks aimed at resolving the nearly four-year conflict continue in the United Arab Emirates. The coordinated strikes left over a million people without power in sub-zero temperatures, drawing condemnation from Ukrainian officials and raising questions about the efficacy of ongoing diplomatic efforts.
Widespread Devastation and Civilian Casualties Reported
In a devastating series of overnight attacks, Russia launched approximately 21 missiles and 375 drones at Ukrainian cities, primarily targeting Kyiv and Kharkiv. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that energy facilities were a key objective, but the strikes also impacted a maternity hospital, a dormitory housing displaced persons, a medical college, and numerous residential buildings. Kyiv’s deputy prime minister reported that at least 1.2 million buildings were left without power across the country, with over 800,000 of those in the capital alone. Temperatures in Kyiv plunged to -13C, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis for the nearly 6,000 buildings left without heat, according to Mayor Vitali Klitschko. Additionally, hundreds of thousands in the Chernihiv region are without power after an important energy facility near Nizhyn was damaged, according to Sky News.
Zelenskyy Urges Allies to Uphold Air Defence Commitments
In response to the relentless attacks, President Zelenskyy issued an urgent plea to international allies, emphasizing the critical need for immediate and sustained air defence support. He stated, "Every such Russian strike on our energy infrastructure proves that there must be no delays in supplying air defences." Zelenskyy stressed that these strikes demand a "strong response" and that every missile for systems like Patriot and NASAMS is vital for protecting critical infrastructure and enabling citizens to endure the harsh winter. He highlighted the importance of fully implementing all agreements on air defence, including those made with "President Trump in Davos." This call for enhanced capabilities comes as military analyst Professor Michael Clarke suggested the timing and design of these strikes were an attempt to convince the White House of Russia's perceived invincibility and the inevitability of its victory in the Donbas.
Peace Talks Resume Amidst Outrage and Weariness
Despite the escalating conflict, a second day of peace talks between Ukrainian, Russian, and US envoys resumed in Abu Dhabi, UAE. This marks the first meeting of these parties in nearly four years. While US officials reportedly described initial discussions as "productive," Ukrainian foreign minister Andrii Sybiha condemned the latest aggression, stating, "This barbaric attack once again proves that Putin's place is not at the board of peace, but at the dock of the special tribunal." Security and defence editor Deborah Haynes, reporting from Kyiv, observed a "real sense of outrage and weariness" among civilians enduring continued attacks during these negotiations. Moscow correspondent Ivor Bennett noted that while the continuation of talks is a positive sign, a significant breakthrough is not anticipated, a sentiment echoed by correspondent Sally Lockwood who questioned what tangible progress could arise from the discussions given the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, as reported by Sky News.
Stalemate Over Territory and "Nonsense" Proposals
The core sticking points in any potential peace agreement remain deeply entrenched. The Kremlin continues to demand that Ukraine relinquish control over the Donbas region, which Russian forces currently occupy. However, there is little appetite among the Ukrainian populace or its leadership for territorial concessions. President Zelenskyy previously dismissed a Russian proposal to use frozen Russian assets in the US, estimated at nearly $5 billion, to fund the rebuilding of Donbas cities destroyed by Russia, deeming the idea "nonsense." While Washington reportedly pressures Kyiv to reach a peace deal, the latest “massive” strikes by Russia on Ukraine’s largest cities during the talks underscore the deeply challenging and unpredictable nature of the diplomatic path forward.
