An Air Quality Alert takes effect at noon Monday for Kitsap, King, Pierce, Snohomish and Thurston counties, and it will not lift until 5 p.m. Wednesday. The National Weather Service says wildfire smoke from fires burning in Eastern Washington and southern British Columbia will drift into the Puget Sound region beginning Sunday evening, thickening through Tuesday before conditions start to clear. For Kitsap County, where the marine air that usually keeps summer smoke at bay has already thinned out, the alert lands on top of a stretch of unusually hot, dry days that will make it harder to simply stay inside with the windows open.
The alert arrives as the region's largest wildfires, the Old Trails Fire east of Spokane and the Kaiser Canyon Fire on the Colville Reservation, continue to burn in exactly the stretch of Eastern Washington the forecast points to as the smoke's origin. The Kitsap Sun reported the alert Monday morning, citing the same NWS statement that triggered warnings across four other Puget Sound counties simultaneously.
The Alert Covers Five Counties Through Wednesday Evening
The National Weather Service statement, issued at 10:49 a.m. Monday, names King, Kitsap, Pierce, Snohomish and Thurston counties as under an Air Quality Alert from noon Monday, Aug. 3, through 5 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5, "due to expected wildfire smoke from regional fires," according to the Kitsap Sun. The statement adds that "air quality conditions are expected to worsen throughout the day today as smoke begins to mix," a direct warning that Monday itself, not just Tuesday, will see deteriorating conditions. That footprint covers essentially the entire Puget Sound metro, stretching from Everett in the north to Olympia's doorstep in the south, with Bremerton and the rest of Kitsap County squarely inside the boundary rather than on its edge. The alert is explicitly tied to smoke rather than to heat or ground-level ozone, which distinguishes it from the separate air-quality bulletins the region sometimes issues on the hottest, stillest days of summer when pollution simply has nowhere to go. Unlike a heat advisory, which is a forecast of a known and predictable temperature curve, a smoke alert like this one is inherently a moving target: the NWS can specify a start and end time, but the actual severity in any one neighborhood will depend on hour-by-hour shifts in wind direction and plume height that no single alert can fully capture in advance. That is why the bulletin frames Monday as the start of "worsening" conditions rather than the peak of them, leaving the worst air of the week still to arrive after the alert has already been in effect for a full day.
Smoke Is Converging on Western Washington From Two Directions
Dustin Guy, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, told The News Tribune that winds will push smoke from wildfires burning in Eastern Washington and southern British Columbia into Western Washington starting Sunday evening and continuing into at least midweek. "As we get into Tuesday, the smoke will start to get a little thicker," Guy said. The NWS statement did not name specific fires, but the region's largest active blazes sit directly upwind: the Old Trails Fire, which forced a statewide wildfire emergency declaration from Gov. Bob Ferguson on Sunday after burning more than 640 structures near Spokane, and the Kaiser Canyon Fire on the Colville Reservation, the largest fire in Washington so far this year at more than 126,000 acres. Neither fire needs to be the sole source for the plume to reach Kitsap. Wildfire smoke routinely travels hundreds of miles once it lifts into the upper atmosphere and gets caught by prevailing westerly winds, which is also why the same alert cites fires burning in southern British Columbia, a source with no connection to either Eastern Washington blaze but positioned to feed smoke into the same air mass. That two-source convergence, one plume riding in from the north and another pushing west from the Cascades, is part of why forecasters expect the smoke to thicken through Tuesday rather than simply pass through in a single afternoon.
What the Air Quality Index Numbers Actually Mean
Air agencies measure smoke severity using the Air Quality Index, a 0-to-500 scale built around how much fine particulate matter is suspended in the air. Under the EPA's published categories, a reading of 0-50 is "Good," with little or no health risk; 51-100 is "Moderate," generally acceptable except for people unusually sensitive to pollution; and 101-150 is "Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups," where risk climbs for children, older adults and people with heart or lung conditions. Beyond that, 151-200 is flatly "Unhealthy," meaning everyone may start to feel effects; 201-300 is "Very Unhealthy," described by agencies as emergency conditions; and 301-500 is "Hazardous," the point at which health officials advise avoiding all outdoor activity regardless of age or health status. As of Sunday afternoon, the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency was forecasting the region to range from moderate to unhealthy for sensitive groups Monday, worsening to a range of unhealthy for sensitive groups to outright unhealthy on Tuesday. That means the region's air is forecast to keep getting worse after the alert begins, not to peak at the moment it takes effect. Monday's noon start time is a precaution ahead of the worst air, not a response to it. The scale itself was designed around long-term pollution sources like traffic and industry, but wildfire smoke can push readings from "Good" to "Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups" within a matter of hours once a plume settles over a valley, which is part of why local agencies update their AQI forecasts multiple times a day during an active smoke event rather than issuing one static number for the week.
Kitsap Sits at the Seam Between Two Different Clean Air Agencies
Kitsap County's air quality is monitored and issued by the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency, the same body responsible for King, Pierce and Snohomish counties, not by the Olympic Region Clean Air Agency, which covers Thurston, Clallam, Grays Harbor, Jefferson, Mason and Pacific counties just across the water. That distinction matters this week: as of Sunday afternoon, the Olympic Region agency had not posted any smoke warning on its own website, even though Thurston County is named in the same statewide NWS alert that covers Kitsap. Residents who check a county-specific source rather than the statewide NWS bulletin could see two different pictures of the same smoke event, depending entirely on which agency's page they happen to land on. For Bremerton and the rest of Kitsap, the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency's forecast, not the Olympic Region's, is the one that actually applies, and as of Sunday afternoon it was the more detailed of the two: Puget Sound had already posted a Monday-through-Tuesday range reaching "unhealthy," while Olympic Region's own six-county site had no smoke warning up at all. That gap between two neighboring agencies covering the same regional smoke event is a reminder that "checking local air quality" only works if a resident knows which of two overlapping jurisdictions their own address actually falls under, and Kitsap's peninsula geography, split by water from the rest of the Puget Sound agency's mainland counties, makes that distinction easier to miss than it would be in a single contiguous service area.
Who Should Take the Warning Most Seriously
The EPA identifies sensitive groups as people with chronic lung or cardiovascular disease, children 18 and younger, adults 65 and older, and pregnant people. The CDC lists the range of symptoms wildfire smoke can trigger even in healthy adults with no preexisting conditions: coughing, wheezing, trouble breathing, asthma attacks, stinging eyes, a scratchy throat, a runny nose, irritated sinuses, headaches, fatigue, chest pain and a fast heartbeat. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources' guidance, cited by the Kitsap Sun, recommends running an indoor air purifier, setting home air conditioning units to recirculate with a high-efficiency filter, and avoiding activities that add to indoor pollution, including vacuuming, burning candles, frying food or using gas appliances, while the alert is active. The same guidance suggests using a damp cloth rather than a dry one to clean up dust, since a dry cloth or duster tends to send trapped particles back into the air instead of removing them. Anyone who has to go outside for an extended period is advised to wear an N95 mask rather than a cloth or surgical mask, which do not filter fine particulate matter effectively regardless of how tightly they fit. None of the guidance is specific to Kitsap County, since it comes from national health agencies rather than a local source, but the underlying advice applies the same way to a household in Bremerton as it does to one in Seattle or Spokane: the particles driving the alert are small enough to bypass the body's normal filtering and reach deep into the lungs, which is the reason the warning extends to healthy adults and not just the groups the CDC and EPA single out by name.
Heat Arriving at the Same Time Makes the Smoke Harder to Escape
The smoke is arriving alongside a genuine heat spike, not instead of one. The News Tribune reported forecast highs of 70, 77 and 80 degrees in Tacoma on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively, with Olympia expected to reach 80 Monday, 89 Tuesday and 94 by Wednesday, roughly the same three days the smoke alert covers. That combination is worse for Kitsap households than either factor alone. The standard smoke advice, to stay indoors with windows shut, works directly against the standard heat advice to ventilate a house that lacks air conditioning, which describes most homes in a region where central AC has historically been rare compared with the rest of the country. Households without a working air conditioner or air purifier face a genuine trade-off this week between smoke exposure and heat exposure, and the NWS alert's own guidance to recirculate rather than pull in outside air only works for the households that already own cooling equipment to recirculate through in the first place. The alert's Wednesday evening end time also lines up almost exactly with when temperatures are forecast to peak in Olympia, meaning the worst air and the worst heat of the week are likely to land on the same day rather than trade off in sequence, leaving a narrower window than usual for anyone planning to wait one problem out before addressing the other.
