Kitsap Watched a Blue-Green Streak Cross the Sky Before 1 A.M.
The fireball first became visible at 12:48 a.m. Pacific time Friday, and within hours the American Meteor Society had logged reports from Washington, Oregon, Idaho and British Columbia, nearly 250 by noon, according to the group. On the Olympic Peninsula, witness Andrew Davidson described it to KOMO News as "a massive meteor" that "streamed across the sky, emitting a long trail and two bright flashes," a sighting logged from Chimacum in neighboring Jefferson County, just across Hood Canal from Kitsap. The Kitsap Sun's own coverage places a sighting within the county itself, part of a reporting footprint that stretched from the Puget Sound region east through Yakima and Spokane Valley to Wenatchee, Blaine and Port Angeles.
The American Meteor Society called witnessing a fireball this bright "extremely rare and often a once-in-a-lifetime event," a description borne out by how many people it woke up. In Spokane Valley, resident Lisa Connors told The Spokesman-Review she had never seen a meteor before and initially assumed something had happened at a neighbor's property before her home security camera showed her what had actually lit up the yard. Robert Lunsford, an AMS observer quoted in the same report, said he was "flabbergasted" by the volume of overnight sightings: "It put on a show. The object first became visible 48 miles above Soap Lake in Grant County, then traveled roughly 36 miles north through the upper atmosphere before fragmenting 28 miles above a spot NASA identifies as Sim's Corner. NASA classifies it as a small asteroid fragment about 16 inches in diameter and approximately 170 pounds, moving at 33,000 miles per hour, or roughly nine miles every second.
That instrumented figure is worth setting against what observers on the ground guessed in real time. Lunsford, speaking to reporters within hours of the event, estimated the object's speed at around 25 miles per second, nearly triple NASA's calculated figure. Why NASA Says This Wasn't a Perseid
The timing invited an obvious assumption. The Perseid meteor shower, one of the year's most reliable and widely watched, peaked over the night of August 12 into the morning of August 13, roughly a day and a half before Friday's fireball, and Perseid activity remains elevated for days after its peak. Multiple early reports out of the Columbia Basin region speculated a Perseid connection given the overlapping timing.
NASA's own classification says otherwise. The agency's fireball event log categorizes Friday's object as "a background sporadic meteor" and explicitly states it was not part of the Perseid shower. Sporadic meteors are the background rate of debris that enters Earth's atmosphere on any given night, unconnected to any specific comet's debris trail, as opposed to shower meteors, which arrive from a single, predictable direction tied to a parent comet's orbit. That distinction is precisely why Friday's event registered as unusual even to an organization used to tracking meteor activity: a fireball of this size and brightness would have been notable on any night of the year, Perseids or not, and simply happened to land in the same week as the shower everyone was already looking up for.
Could Fragments Have Reached the Ground Near Bridgeport?
NASA's event log notes that Doppler weather radar over the region shows patterns consistent with small meteorites reaching the ground in the area. That level of surviving debris is itself informative, since it means enough of the object's mass made it through fragmentation and deceleration to fall as identifiable rock rather than burning away entirely. Lunsford told the Spokesman-Review he suspected possible fragment impacts near Bridgeport or Brewster in Douglas County, both towns that sit close to Sim's Corner, NASA's identified fragmentation point.
No recovery has been confirmed publicly as of this writing, and meteorite hunting is a slow, methodical process even with a rough radar-derived search area. Genuine meteorites are typically identified by a dark, often glassy fusion crust from atmospheric heating, unusual density for their size, and magnetic response, and confirming a find usually requires a specialized lab, not a field guess. Anyone in the Douglas County search area who believes they've found a candidate fragment is generally advised not to handle it with bare hands, to photograph it in place, and to report it to the American Meteor Society or a university geology department before moving it, since contamination and mishandling are common ways a genuine find gets disqualified from scientific study.
What to Watch For Next in Washington's Skies
Friday's fireball is a reminder that the best meteor sightings are rarely the predictable ones. The Perseids remain active through late August but are well past peak, and the next scheduled shower of note is the Orionids, expected to peak the night of October 21 into October 22, though sources differ by a day depending on which observatory's calculation is used. This year's Orionid peak coincides with a waxing gibbous moon, which will wash out all but the brightest meteors, a far less favorable viewing window than Friday's dark, clear sky delivered by chance.
For Kitsap residents who did catch Friday's display, or who want to be ready for the next one, the American Meteor Society's fireball reporting form is the same tool that turned Friday's scattered sightings into a triangulated NASA trajectory: multiple independent reports, logged with approximate time and direction, are what let researchers reconstruct an object's actual path rather than relying on any single account.
