The Science Behind Hawaii's Usual Immunity to Hurricanes

Hawaii's rarity of direct hurricane hits is not luck, it is physics that usually protects the islands and, this weekend, is barely doing so. Tropical cyclones need sustained sea-surface temperatures above roughly 80 degrees Fahrenheit to hold their strength, and storms approaching Hawaii from the east typically run into a band of cooler water that acts as a brake on their fuel supply. Forecasters expect Lala to accelerate and turn westward Sunday, pulling its heaviest bands away from the Big Island and passing just south of Maui, Oahu and Kauai through the day. That track would spare the more populous islands the direct hurricane conditions the Big Island saw Saturday, though tropical-storm-force winds extending 175 miles from the center mean all four counties were likely to see some combination of heavy rain, rough surf and gusty wind into Sunday regardless of how close Lala's exact path runs.

Storm surge of 1 to 3 feet above normal tide levels was forecast along Big Island shores, on top of already life-threatening surf on east- and southeast-facing beaches, a hazard the National Weather Service said would persist through peak swells overnight even as the wind and rain threat eased. County officials had not set a timeline by midday Saturday for reopening Highway 250, resuming Hele-On bus service or closing the shelter system, tying those decisions instead to the six-to-10-hour window Alameda described rather than a fixed clock.

For a state whose hurricane preparedness culture has been built around storms weakening before they arrive, Lala's slow, sustained approach was itself the news. Whether Saturday's final tally ends up measured in power-restoration hours or in a 155-year record broken, Hawaii County's emergency declaration, its 12 open shelters and its closed campuses were responses to a storm that did not behave the way the Pacific usually treats hurricanes bound for these islands.

Lala also will not be the season's last test. NOAA's central Pacific outlook, issued in May, put the odds of an above-normal hurricane season at 70% and forecast five to 13 tropical cyclones between June and the end of November, with three-plus months of that window still ahead. Whatever verdict Saturday night delivers on the Big Island, the same El Niño-warmed waters that let Lala reach hurricane strength this close to shore remain in place for whatever the rest of the season brings.
